Dome 6000

About

We have ventured into the world of structural product design with the design and manufacture of our first product - a 6 metre diameter geodesic dome. As specialist structural engineers we are uniquely positioned to design and manufacture creative, cutting edge structural products for a number of different industries. Thinking about a structure from a more product perspective allowed us to refine what is usually a once off design process through a number of iterations, resulting in a product that is both beautiful, practical and unique to the market.

What is a Geodesic Dome

A Geodesic dome is a spherical form made up of triangular facets consisting of either skeletal struts or flat planes. It can take many forms that vary both the density and polygon arrangement of the struts resulting in a highly efficient structural system. It was developed in the 20th century by American engineer and architect R. Buckminster Fuller.

The Design

The Dome 6000 design is based around the principles of a geodesic dome, however the members have been curved to match the spherical surface, which allows for a less dense member grid while still maintaining appeal of the spherical form.

The frame is precisely made using a combination of sustainable timber and steel, which supports a highly stressed weatherproof pvc membrane.

Cutting edge structural design processes have been utilised throughout all aspects of the design process, including the use of parametric grasshopper routines for the development of all geometry and details, formfinding software for the generation of the fabric shape and nonlinear analysis for the assessment of the structure under wind and other loading conditions.

The atmosphere inside the dome is soft and warm. One feels surrounded by and connected to the beautiful timber structure which feels more like a sculpture than a dwelling.

Porthole windows have been incorporated into the membrane and the large, circular door drapes back allowing for a magnificent connection to the external landscape.
